The emirates of Northern Nigeria;
a preliminary survey of their historical traditions
Oxford University Press. London. 1966. 638 p.
Foreword
It gives me great pleasure to introduce the new issue of The Emirates of Northern Nigeria in the hope that it will continue to inspire the Emirates as a symbol of unity and that these Emirates may continue to find a place of honour in our traditional society.
I feel honoured that a book written many years ago by my old tutor, Mr Hogben, has been brought up to date and that I should be invited to write this Foreword. I have always resorted to it in drawing material for my speeches and it is my earnest hope that the new issue will be a source of inspiration to those in Nigeria who cherish our tradition and are anxious to continue to pilot our nation along the right lines, having regard to its past achievements.
I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to my former European teachers and mentors who have done so much for Kigeria in very difficult circumstances. I speak on behalf of myself and many others who owe them a debt of gratitude.
